Metal is a genre derived from rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and United States. While its roots are unequivocally entrenched in rock music, its path has diverged to such a degree that it has developed into its own unique standing with variable subcultures.

With roots in blues rock, psychedelic rock, and acid rock, metal bands developed a thick, monumental sound characterized by distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats and loudness. The lyrics and performances are usually associated with aggression and machismo, an issue that has sometimes led to accusations of misogyny. Heavy metal subgenres variously emphasize, alter, or omit one or more of these attributes.
